Williams London-bound in 2012?
Deron Williams was among a group of University of Illinois basketball players who had their jerseys retired by the Flyin’ Illini at a charity alumni game Saturday night.
The Utah Jazz point guard also got a huge endorsement for rejoining Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics.
The glowing recommendation came from Jerry Colangelo, the man who pulled the trigger on filling roster spots for the gold-medal-winning Redeem Team.
“Deron was one of my top picks at point guard because I believed in him. He did the University proud, the country proud,” the Illinois alum and USA Basketball managing director told the Daily Illini.
“And he wants to continue representing this country going forward, so I’m sure you’ll be seeing him in 2012 in London.”
A week after winning the gold medal in Beijing, Williams told Utah media he hoped being a part of the country’s international team would be part of his future.
“If you asked me right now, I said, ‘Yeah, I want to play,”‘ Williams said talking about his Olympic experience. “If they want me back, I’m there.”
According to the Daily Illini story, Williams received a standing ovation Saturday night from 15,417 in attendance at the Assembly Hall. The huge crowd showed up for the showdown of the 2005 NCAA runner-ups and the school’s heralded-but-aged 1989 team, which included Nick Anderson and Kendall Gill.
Williams topped all scorers with 19 points. He also wouldn’t come off the floor when asked by Illinois coach Bruce Weber. Williams apparently shook his head and told him: “This is my workout.”
Weber joked that he prayed Williams wouldn’t get hurt.
“He said he needed to work out today…” Weber said. “He loves to play. That’s why he’s so special.”
Williams’ Point of Hope Foundation was among the charities that benefited from the event.
Former Jazz guard Dee Brown also played in the game, won by the ’05 squad, 84-70.
