Where should Almond be?

BOISE ‘ Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was asked at training camp here today if 2007 first-round draft choice Morris Almond would benefit from another year in the NBA Development League, especially should a glut of young perimeter players on the Jazz roster, including Ronnie Brewer and C.J. Miles, prevent the shot-happy shooting guard from earning significant NBA playing time in his second pro season.
His answer was not necessarily direct, but it did seem telling.
‘Basketball is a game where you benefit from playing ‘ wherever you play,” Sloan said.
Almond had two 50-point games and averaged more than 25 points per game while spending most of last season with the D-League’s Orem Flash.
There, Jazz brass hoped he’d show a more all-around game ‘ something they’re still seeking.
So just where would Almond better develop?
On one hand, he played four collegiate seasons at Rice University, is already 23 years old and isn’t exactly a still-impressionable youngster.
Just what, really, is there to be gained by continuing to prove he has no problem scoring against inferior competition on the minor-league level?
On the other, should Jazz minutes not be won, he’s not going to get any better ‘ or develop that all-around game ‘ if he’s riding NBA pine.
So just where should Almond be if he can’t crack Sloan’s regular rotation?
Salt Lake City? Orem? Or maybe somewhere in-between, and that’s not to suggest Sandy.
You make the call.
