Deron Williams loves the deal — for Denver
LOS ANGELES ‘ Forget whatever financial implications it may have.
Deron Williams loved the deal.
As long, that is, if you’re the Denver Nuggets ‘ who just picked up longtime Detroit point guard Chauncey Billups and change for guard Allen Iverson.
It’s a swap, Williams suggests, that should suit Nuggets All-Star Carmelo Anthony ‘ who just happens to have been his teammate this past summer on Team USA’s gold-medal winning Olympic club ‘ especially well.
‘I think it’s a great trade (for Denver),” Williams said Monday, shortly after the exchange was made public. ‘AI’s definitely a great player, but I think Chauncey’s more in the mold they need.
‘They need somebody to get the ball to ‘Melo; let him work. Sometimes those two guys (Iverson and Anthony) kind of crossed each other out, because late in the game both of them want shots. So, Chauncey definitely brings a different aspect to the game for them ‘ and something I think they need.”
The addition of Billups ‘ who wound up without one of the Team USA point guard spots that went to Williams, Jason Kidd and Chris Paul ‘ makes Denver, at least in Williams’ mind, a force now to be reckoned with in the NBA’s Northwest Division.
‘That was the team that can make noise anyway,” he said, ‘just because of the kind of players they have.”
But is it enough to make the 3-0 Jazz ‘ who have won the division each of the past two seasons, and before Monday seemed safe to pencil in as the winner yet again ‘ really have to worry about Denver being an actual threat to take the Northwest’s automatic playoff berth?
C’mon, in unison: You make the call ‘
