Cool item, memorable moments
WASHINGTON ‘ Before the Jazz face the Washington Wizards tonight, one cool item and a couple memories related their game Tuesday night in Philadelphia:
At their morning shootaround Tuesday, C.J. Miles wore a warmup jacket. Jarron Collins blew in his hands, Kosta Koufos rubbed his and Brevin Knight stuck one in each pocket.
The Wachovia Center, in other words, was really cold.
Jerry Sloan recognized that, and had his players go at only half-speed so no one got injured. Not that the longtime Jazz coach felt too, too sorry for his players.
‘We played a game in Chicago,” Sloan said, ‘it was 39 degrees in the Stadium.”
Speaking of arenas, the 42-year-old Spectrum ‘ former home to both the 76ers and the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers ‘ will be closing next year.
The Sixers, who played there through 1996, will play one more regular-season game in the building before it shuts down, on March 13 vs. Chicago.
A couple memorable Jazz moments in the venue: On Dec. 18, 1992, John Stockton dished a Spectrum-record 22 assists in a 119-98 Utah win, and on April 7, 1976, Pennsylvania native Pistol Pete Maravich dropped 38 on the 76ers.
The Spectrum’s current tenants include minor-league hockey’s Philadelphia Phantoms.
