From Russia, with love – of NBA and New Jersey?
If Andrei Kirilenko knows what he’s talking about, some NBA fans in New Jersey – and/or perhaps in Brooklyn – could be very happy in the future.
The Utah Jazz forward weighed in about a wealthy Russian investor who supposedly is looking into becoming the owner of the New Jersey Nets.
According to multiple reports, Mikhail Prokhorov is on the verge of buying the bulk of the franchise. One interesting part, aside from the fact that an international businessman might own a major pro team in the U.S., is that the price tag for the Nets is reportedly only a buck.
(Insert your own joke about the Nets not even being worth that much here, please.)
There is some fine print, of course. The Russian investor would also have to bankroll a $700 million arena – whether that will be in Brooklyn or New Jersey was not specified.
Either way, Kirilenko told RussiaToday.com he believes it would be a great thing.
“I know him very well. He is a huge fan of basketball,” Kirilenko said. “If you take a look at the local level, he turned (Russian pro team) CSKA into one of the best teams in Europe. I’m pretty sure his goal with the New Jersey Nets is to do the same thing.”
But in America this time, of course.
Now three things remain to be seen:
1. Will it actually happen?
2. Will A.K. to N.J. rumors begin to surface?
3. Will they rename them the New Jersey Nyets?
