Tyrone Corbin update 3.1
Yet another update on Jazz assistant coach Tyrone Corbin’s quest to land an NBA head coaching job — and it’s only looking lukewarm for Corbin:
After reporting late Thursday night that former Dallas Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson “is thought to be” minority owner Gary Chouest’s top choice to lead the New Orleans Hornets, the New Orleans Times Picayune is reversing course.
Now the newspaper is reporting that New Orleans native Johnson “is not expected to get a second interview” and “was initially believed to be the top choice Chouest, but a source said Friday that Chouest is behind” Boston Celtics assistant Tom Thibodeau and Portland assistant Monty Williams.
Both the Times Picayune and Yahoo.com reported that both Thibodeau, also a candidate in Chicago, and Williams will get second interviews in New Orleans — but Johnson will not.
The New Orleans paper also reported on its website that, according to unidentified “league sources,” Corbin — who was among eight candidates to take part in initial interviews for the Hornets job — “also could get a second interview.”
But, the Times Picayune report also said, Thibodeau and Williams “have emerged as the favorites to become the next coach” of the Hornets.
Corbin also no longer is being mentioned prominently as a candidate in Atlanta, where AOLFanhouse.com reports that Dallas assistant Dwane Casey and ex-Jazz point guard Mark Jackson are — according to an unidentified source — “1-2 frontrunners.”
