Greg Monroe's BYU tie
Before the Jazz work out a half-dozen perimeter players this morning, one item of note regarding the first NBA Draft prospect they auditioned this month:
Georgetown big man Greg Monroe, a possible pick for Utah at No. 9 overall in the June 24 draft, indeed is a nephew of former BYU defensive back Norm Dixon.
Louisiana native Monroe even has seen Dixon play for the Cougars.
Not in person, though.
Only on ESPNClassic, he said with a laugh.
Dixon, you see, lettered from 1988-90 at BYU. Monroe, who celebrated his 20th birthday working out for the Jazz on Friday, wasn’t born until 1990.
Based on what Monroe’s heard, though, Dixon has nothing but good things to say about his days in Provo.
“Honestly, he said he loved it here. He loved the city,” Monroe said. “He said if he had a chance he would come visit, and I’m pretty sure he’s (come) back many times.”
Wake Forest small forward Al-Farouq Aminu, Nevada small forward Luke Babbitt, Butler swingman Gordon Hayward, Kansas shooting guard Xavier Henry, Texas small forward Damion James and Rider guard Ryan Thompson all are scheduled to work out this morning for the Jazz.
All but Thompson are projected first-round draft picks.
